Analyst Christopher Soghoian–who wrote a Times op-ed last fall saying that journalists must learn digital safety skills to protect sources–blogged that Cryptocat had far too many structural flaws for safe use in a repressive environment.Īn expert writing in Wired agreed. Within three months of winning a prize associated with The Wall Street Journal, Cryptocat ended up like a cat caught in storm–wet, dirty, and a little worse for wear. Kobeissi was profiled in The New York Times Forbes and especially Wired each praised the tool. Journalists and many human rights activists, for their part, complain that digital safety tools are too difficult or time-consuming to operate, and, even if one tried to learn them, they often don’t work as expected.Ĭryptocat promised to finally bridge these two distinct cultures. But for years digital safety tools have been so hard to use that few human rights defenders and even fewer journalists (my best guess is one in a 100) employ them.Īctivist technologists often complain that journalists and human rights defenders are either too lazy or foolish to not consistently use digital safety tools when they are operating in hostile environments. Of course, no tool is completely safe, and much depends on the capabilities of the eavesdropper. Technologists wary of government surveillance have been designing free encryption software since the early 1990s. A Lebanese-born, Montreal-based computer scientist, college student, and activist named Nadim Kobeissi had developed a cryptography tool, Cryptocat, for the Internet that seemed as easy to use as Facebook Chat but was presumably far more secure.Įncrypted communications are hardly a new idea. After all, this was the most significant of the early first-person shooters and became one of the most popular, if not played, video games up to that point in time. I couldn’t tell you what went through my head then, but I don’t remember being blown away, even considering the context of its release. My first gameplay exposure came with the Xbox Live Arcade release. His experience with Doom supersedes mine, having played it on PC closer to its cultural explosion. One knock against the 32X version is the limited real estate devoted to the game screen. Our session lasted a couple of hours, and we wound up making it to the final stage*. That game’s primitive polygonal graphics can be off-putting at first, but I was surprised at how fast and responsive the game was it’s definitely a worthwhile title. As he’s not partial to racing games we barely touched VRD. The two that we spent the most time with were Virtua Racing Deluxe and Doom. With such a limited library there aren’t a lot of options, especially when I only have a few games. Our session was a memorable one though, so it was worth it. There are three power bricks (although only two are needed if the Sega CD isn’t being utilized), an A/V cable connecting the Genesis and 32X, and an A/V cable connecting the monstrosity to the TV. Along with it, I also have a Sega CD which makes setup an absolute chore. Its library rounds out at about forty titles which pales in comparison to the nine hundred plus that the Genesis hosted. It’s an add-on for the Sega Genesis that increased its power but never proved successful for a variety of reasons, namely poor timing. Who can say what sparked it, but one evening Jeff and I played the Sega 32X. I was oddly compelled to continue playing it, even when I felt like many of my deaths were cheap, so take that as you will. After seeing that I barely scraped the surface I am interested in playing more of it, but not because what I experienced was such a joy to play. This being the case, I would only take this review as my experiences with a minority of the game and not a comprehensive examination of it. You want the lowdown though? I only progressed to the third stage and the game has twelve! I had no idea it was that beefy until I did further research. This sounds like a lot of negativity towards Alien 3. Hostages were abound, but aliens were more prevalent. They’d quickly charge and if I didn’t immediately start shooting, I would take damage. Often, they’d materialize at the edge of the screen as I progressed. Locating the prisoners wasn’t so bad (I had to explore the stages anyways, right?) but constantly getting bum rushed by the aliens grew annoying. Most took a few attempts to learn where the aliens popped up and rushed me and where the prisoners were. The stages needed to be completed in a set amount of time and this was hard to do the first time through. Most stages tasked Ripley with rescuing the prisoners of Fiorina 161 and combating the aliens. The gameplay was related to the events of the movie too but skewed (and omitted) the storyline in favor of more action. It looks to have a few different environments to be fair, but I didn’t witness these firsthand. On the whole, I thought the movie was rather brown and monotonous visually, and the game didn’t shake this aura early on. This is to say, I didn’t begin playing the Genesis game with much optimism. Of the “five” movies, I’d put Alien 3 at the bottom of the list. It helped too! I can comprehend the mediocrity of Alien 3 on the Sega Genesis a little more knowing that the movie it’s based on is of the same quality. I’ve now watched all movies in the franchise and am ready to dive into the related games and feel confident in my understanding of the source material. It began in earnest after watching Prometheus, an “unofficial” movie in the series, although it’s about as official as anything else if you ask me. That guide will go into a lot of detail about how to setup and use the codes you find on these pages and some trouble shooting tips for those who need them.Truly my foray into the Alien franchise began with Alien Trilogy on the PlayStation, although I’ve barely touched that game. Those of you out there who are playing on an SNES Emulator that need help figuring out how to use the codes on this page should visit my how to setup Game Genie and PAR codes for SNES guide. Not everyone does, unfortunately, sometimes because they couldn't care less, and sometimes because they just haven't thought about it (I feel another one of those famous "audience behaviour" threads coming on. I think a lot of people who are regular theatre/ballet/operagoers regard any breach of theatre etiquette as extremely bad manners, and expect everyone else to know better. Some people of a certain age and class (usually older middle-class women) seem to think that they have the right to complain the minute that something is not to their liking. I'm afraid that it isn't only the young who are rude. Birthday Offering and Noces wouldn't be a problem, I'd have thought.Īnyway, welcome to the forum, Marieve, and I hope you enjoy the performance in any case! I think you may lose a bit in Month if you can't see the facial expressions, but doubt it'll be that much: if it were MacMillan, I might say differently. I suppose it's going to depend, among other things, on how good your eyesight is. Bluebird (I don't know if that was her just posting while I'm writing this) is very good on the specs of such things. Some even use small binoculars (I have a x8 magnification pair which I find too much, but a x4 seems to work). Quite a few people in the amphi do use opera glasses. I was tempted to reply that if I fainted as a result and had to be carted out of there by ushers it would have disrupted his (and a lot of other people's) appreciation of the performance far more than me occasionally fanning myself!Īnyway, I'm getting a little off the subject here. Someone sitting in the front row of the stalls circle leant over and asked me, rather brusquely, to stop. I remember once, early on in my ROH-going career, I was in the rear stalls for some reason (in the days when I think they were lower down than they are now relative to the stalls circle), it was sweltering hot and I needed to fan myself so I could breathe adequately. That said, it's pot luck partly, anyway: some audience members are very sensitive to anything like that, while others are much more laid back. When using them, I usually try and keep my arms tightly in, and favour the left arm or right arm depending on where I'm sitting and where people are sitting behind me (trying to keep the view of the arm obliterated by my body if possible) so as to try not to cause any obstruction. I've had people lean forward in front of me to peer into the orchestra pit at crucial bits of the action and it absolutely infuriates me when that happens.Īs for opera-glass etiquette, I think you do need to be a bit careful, because arms can stick out (and so can binoculars). Reaching a compromise without risking their medication needs is crucial.Īdditionally, those that can record family members’ voices are helpful for patients with Dementia or Alzheimer’s. If you have a similar situation, I suggest doing the same. She still feels capable while I have my peace of mind. She loves this little program we have going on, making her experiences more stress-free and contributing to her health. I fixed her prescription medication weekly, kept them in pill organizers, labeled the packaging, and set the time. These phone apps and devices helped us reach a middle ground. She hated being tailed around and dictated. When I started caring for my mother, she wanted to be independent. Reason 3: It Allows Elders to be Independent When in doubt, ask your doctor or the most accessible pharmacist. At least with a guide, it’ll be more manageable. They have different packaging appearances, names, labels, refill rules, etc. Medications come in a variety, which can be confusing and lead to errors. There are prescription pills that shouldn’t go together, dosages that shouldn’t exceed, and maintenance medications that you shouldn’t skip.Ī good reminder app is like a friend that’ll patiently remind you of these things. There is no room for mistakes when it comes to medications! Skipping is one thing, but taking the wrong pill or dose is another. The best medication reminder that suits your situation will increase everyone’s efficiency. They can also recall your memories, clear up schedules, etc. These machines remind you about everything, not only weekly schedules. The thing is, skipping pills is often not beneficial for their health. There are, for instance, a series of check-ups or an exercise or therapy program, on top of other things.įorgetting and being preoccupied are common occurrences. When caring for elders or family members, medications are not all there is. But as a caregiver who used medication reminders, I’d say it was a helpful addition that made taking care of my mother easier on top of all my other workload. If you use a pill organizer, ensure that you prepare the medication carefully.ĭo I Really Need a Medication Reminder Alarm? The prescription medications and dose measurements will be pre-prepared, so the user can take the pills as soon as it’s time. This is similar to the medication dispenser, but this comes with a pill organizer (or a pill box) instead. Alternative 3: Pill Organizer with Medication Reminder It can be dangerous for people with dementia or the more vulnerable ones because if the machine goes wrong, they might be disoriented (i.e., take multiple medications and pills, completely forget about dose medications, etc.). It serves as an “assistant” to remind and track maintenance medications. I’d recommend this for high-functioning patients with fewer medications and pills to take. The pill dispenser will automatically release the medications following the set timer, with supposedly correct doses. If caregivers can’t guarantee hands-on medication preparation, a pill dispenser will do the job for you. Alternative 2: Pill Dispenser with Medication Reminders Perhaps it’ll be most helpful for the caregiver instead. The only con is that if your loved ones are not tech-savvy, these complicated medication reminder app features will confuse them even more. You can do so much with the apps available – setting a time for pill intake, noting the proper pill doses, and even making the necessary phone calls.Ī phone also has the date, time, timer, and all the apps you can imagine. If your family member knows how to use one, you can use a medication reminder app (some are even free!) for their meds. I have to admit a smart phone is the handiest device nowadays. With that same goal, there are a few alternatives to achieve this, which I’ll discuss below: Alternative 1: Medication Reminder App Their primary goal is to help more “vulnerable” people with critical reminders. Medication reminder devices are essentially alarm clocks but with more customizable features. |
